New electric motor for sun tracking system
28 October 2013

Sonceboz unveils its new LoadSense drive technology

Sun is one of the most promising renewable energy sources for the next decades. Different technologies allow collecting this energy, each of them exhibit their own specificities and advantages: Photovoltaic (PV), Concentrated Photovoltaic (CPV) or Concentrating Solar Power (CSP). Whatever the sun tracking system technology, it calls for precise, robust and maintenance-free motion systems.

To do so Sonceboz has recently launched an application-specific electric actuator that can be combined with gears and sensors in order to create the optimum sun tracking system. The whole unit reduces the overall system complexity of the solar trackers. The design of this application-specific electric actuator has been taking into consideration the operating environmental conditions of solar tracking applications as well their related challenges. This motor is a full mechatronic drive system, integrating a rugged DC brushless motor, high resolution sensor and LoadSense electronics. DC motors are technically not a viable solution in sun tracking applications due to their limited durability and life time.

The so-called LoadSense embedded electronics improves overall performance by permanently adapting the phase current to meet the needs of the task. That means that high torque from low to medium speed is constantly available for continuous motion mode: start – stop and associated step losses disappear. LoadSense brushless mechatronic systems run in closed loop and different communication interfaces are available or can be customized to fit customer specifications. As a result solar tracking systems benefit from highest safety and smoothest movement. Besides this functionality, the motor features a reduced gear ratio for less backlash and better precision.

The integrated sensor that exhibits a resolution up to 51200 microsteps/revolution permits great positioning accuracy of concentrated optics, panels or mirrors while installed in single axis or dual axis sun tracking systems. Withstanding temperatures from -40 to +100°C and being dust and water ingress resistant (IP67), this motor is highly robust and suits to extensive outdoor usage in a wide variety of climates. Its maintenance-free characteristic is due to its very long life brushless nature: the lack of frictions between brushes provides convenient reliability for solar tracking and heliostats applications.

The core motor technology is already proven to harsh operating environments and severe specifications as it has been successfully used in automotive emission control applications or mobile hydraulics valves for years. A further advantage of this motor includes a reduced electrical consumption thanks to LoadSense electronics, resulting in above average energy efficiency and low maintenance. Installed for instance in small size single axis tracking systems of parabolic troughs, this motion system will reduced the overall system complexity compared to a hydraulic system.

Solar researcher Marc Röger works at the Plataforma Solar de Almería, in southern Spain Throughout his doctoral thesis, Marc Röger developed a contactless measuring technique, which measures the heat transfer of solar power plant components. It is for this discovery that he was awarded the DLR Wissenschaftspreis (Award for Contributions made to Science). Since then, he has been the head of Group Systems in the Department of Qualification at the DLR Institute of Solar Research in Almería,...
Building on the Energy Department’s all-of-the-above energy strategy to continue U.S. leadership in clean energy innovation, the Department today announced over $13 million for five projects to strengthen domestic solar manufacturing and speed commercialization of efficient, affordable photovoltaic and concentrating solar power technologies. As part of the Department’s SunShot Initiative, these awards will help lower the cost of solar electricity, support a growing U.S. solar workforce and...
The Gemasolar solar plant, owned by Torresol Energy, stars again in the advertising campaign of a product, this time in the Gran Turismo®6 (GT6TM) video game for PlayStation®, Sony Computer Entertainment’s console. This innovative solar thermal plant has served as an additional setting in the famous video game to be released worldwide on December 6. Gemasolar is, today, the only solar thermal plant worldwide capable of producing energy round the clock exclusively by means of solar power thanks...
In support of the Obama Administration’s effort to advance our clean energy economy and support American innovation, the Energy Department today announced $19 million to reduce both hardware and non-hardware costs of solar and to drive greater solar energy deployment in the United States. This funding builds on the Energy Department’s broader SunShot Initiative investments that are driving down the cost of solar and making solar affordable for more American families and companies. Since the...
Several large, new solar thermal power plants are expected to begin commercial operation by the end of 2013, more than doubling the solar thermal generating capacity in the United States. The projects use different solar thermal technologies and storage options. Abengoa's Solana plant, which came on line in October 2013, is a 250-megawatt (MW) parabolic trough plant in Gila Bend, Arizona with integrated thermal storage. BrightSource's Ivanpah, expected to enter service by the end of 2013, is a...
