Gemasolar, setting of PlayStation® GranTurismo®6 video game
03 December 2013

The Gemasolar solar plant, owned by Torresol Energy, stars again in the advertising campaign of a product, this time in the Gran Turismo®6 (GT6TM) video game for PlayStation®, Sony Computer Entertainment’s console. This innovative solar thermal plant has served as an additional setting in the famous video game to be released worldwide on December 6. Gemasolar is, today, the only solar thermal plant worldwide capable of producing energy round the clock exclusively by means of solar power thanks to the state-of-the-art technology developed by the engineering and technology group SENER. Moreover, it is the first thermal solar plant to use, at a commercial scale, central tower receiver technology along with a high temperature storage system. It is currently a successful project that stands out for its high efficiency; for example, in the summer of 2013 the plant achieved continuous production operating for 36 consecutive days.

Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) is the latest edition of the best-selling franchise in the history of PlayStation®, with a total sales of over 70 million copies. It is the most realistic driving simulator on the market and attracts followers from all over the world. It was its creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, who personally chose Gemasolar to vivify this new version due to the spectacular scenery of the facility. Gemasolar is part of the extra contents included in the video game as one of the sceneries where players can take pictures of their vehicles and share them with other participants.

The inclusion of the plant in this PlayStation® best-selling video game confirms, once again, that Gemasolar has become a symbol of innovation, sustainability and efficiency for the benefit of both the field of renewable energy and society as a whole.

In this sense, Gemasolar and Torresol Energy are continuously recognized with awards by the solar industry; worth mentioning among them are the recent CSP Today Award won by Torresol Energy in the category ‘CSP Dispatchability Solution’ as a recognition for the performance achieved by the facilities Gemasolar, Valle 1 and Valle 2, all of them located in Andalusia (Spain), that are capable of supplying power to the grid depending on the demand and regardless of solar radiation; thanks to this, a power source like solar energy becomes dispatchable. Likewise, Gemasolar has received recognition also outside the energy sector, such as the prestigious European Business Awards, that the company won in 2011 in the Innovation category.

Similarly to other previous advertising campaigns like those for Mercedes Benz’ new Sprinter van and Louis Vuitton, Gran Turismo®6 has put Gemasolar again in the spotlight, as well as the good work done by SENER in the development of all its engineering and technology and in the construction of this pioneering plant.
