Gemasolar, setting of PlayStation® GranTurismo®6 video game
03 December 2013

The Gemasolar solar plant, owned by Torresol Energy, stars again in the advertising campaign of a product, this time in the Gran Turismo®6 (GT6TM) video game for PlayStation®, Sony Computer Entertainment’s console. This innovative solar thermal plant has served as an additional setting in the famous video game to be released worldwide on December 6. Gemasolar is, today, the only solar thermal plant worldwide capable of producing energy round the clock exclusively by means of solar power thanks to the state-of-the-art technology developed by the engineering and technology group SENER. Moreover, it is the first thermal solar plant to use, at a commercial scale, central tower receiver technology along with a high temperature storage system. It is currently a successful project that stands out for its high efficiency; for example, in the summer of 2013 the plant achieved continuous production operating for 36 consecutive days.

Gran Turismo®6 (GT6™) is the latest edition of the best-selling franchise in the history of PlayStation®, with a total sales of over 70 million copies. It is the most realistic driving simulator on the market and attracts followers from all over the world. It was its creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, who personally chose Gemasolar to vivify this new version due to the spectacular scenery of the facility. Gemasolar is part of the extra contents included in the video game as one of the sceneries where players can take pictures of their vehicles and share them with other participants.

The inclusion of the plant in this PlayStation® best-selling video game confirms, once again, that Gemasolar has become a symbol of innovation, sustainability and efficiency for the benefit of both the field of renewable energy and society as a whole.

In this sense, Gemasolar and Torresol Energy are continuously recognized with awards by the solar industry; worth mentioning among them are the recent CSP Today Award won by Torresol Energy in the category ‘CSP Dispatchability Solution’ as a recognition for the performance achieved by the facilities Gemasolar, Valle 1 and Valle 2, all of them located in Andalusia (Spain), that are capable of supplying power to the grid depending on the demand and regardless of solar radiation; thanks to this, a power source like solar energy becomes dispatchable. Likewise, Gemasolar has received recognition also outside the energy sector, such as the prestigious European Business Awards, that the company won in 2011 in the Innovation category.

Similarly to other previous advertising campaigns like those for Mercedes Benz’ new Sprinter van and Louis Vuitton, Gran Turismo®6 has put Gemasolar again in the spotlight, as well as the good work done by SENER in the development of all its engineering and technology and in the construction of this pioneering plant.

CSP technology has progressed significantly in the last decade but its levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) is still challenging as a standalone energy source. Hybridisation is helping to change that. The price imperative is crucial. CSP costs are forecast at around $208/MWh in 2015, according to the International Energy Agency’s Technology Roadmap – double the rate for onshore wind and more than three times the cost of biomass. Increasingly, innovators are responding with bespoke solutions...
PRESS RELEASE Schlumberger veteran Daniel Palmer to drive expansion in GCC for solar EOR leader FREMONT, Calif. and MUSCAT, Oman – August 5, 2013 – GlassPoint Solar, the global leader in solar enhanced oil recovery (EOR), today announced the appointment of Daniel Palmer as Director of Business Development for the Middle East region. Palmer draws on more than 20 years of experience with Schlumberger, the world’s largest oilfield service provider, to drive GlassPoint’s expansion across the...
A University of Colorado Boulder team has developed a radically new technique that uses the power of sunlight to efficiently split water into its components of hydrogen and oxygen, paving the way for the broad use of hydrogen as a clean, green fuel. The CU-Boulder team has devised a solar-thermal system in which sunlight could be concentrated by a vast array of mirrors onto a single point atop a central tower up to several hundred feet tall. The tower would gather heat generated by the mirror...
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have accidentally made a breakthrough by discovering what is called a 'perfect mirror'. The 'perfect mirror' is able to completely reflect the light without distortion, unlikely conventional mirrors. The finding has been made with a specific wavelength and angle. The Concentrated Solar Power technology which relies on the reflection of mirrors to concentrate the sunlight could see a future improvement in its efficiency if the mirrors have...
With more than 35 years of experience in the power industry, DuBois joins the SolarReserve management team to lead the project management and construction activities SolarReserve, a U.S. developer of utility-scale solar power projects, today announced the appointment of Michael DuBois as Vice President, Project Management and Construction. DuBois will lead the company's efforts to manage the construction of SolarReserve's $1.8 billion of solar power projects that are currently underway, as...
With all the attention Saudi Arabia is getting at the moment it is easy to forget there are other markets for CSP emerging in the Middle East. By Jason Deign Things are moving quickly in the Middle East. Previously CSP Today reported how Kuwait has opened the bidding process for 50MW of solar thermal within its proposed 70MW Shagaya Multi Technology Renewable Energy Power Park. The move, which will see CSP taking centre stage alongside just 10MW of PV and 10MW of wind power, clearly positions...
n a few weeks, the largest solar plant of its kind in the world will start producing power in California’s Mojave Desert. The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System will supply both Northern and Southern California, inching the state one step closer to its ambitious renewable energy goal. But like many of the large solar projects being built in the Mojave, Ivanpah ran into delays and controversy over its environmental impact. Now, in an effort to streamline the process, state officials are...
CSP Today has launched its 7th International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit, in which the main stakeholders gather to discuss the future of the industry. The entire global CSP community will be present at the summit to overcome current challenges. Sevilla will host for the 7th time the International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit (CSP Today Sevilla) on the 12-13th November 2013. After the withdrawal of government support to renewables in Spain this year, the conference is...
